Background Notes

One dollar banknote issued by the Eagle Bank of New Haven, Ct. Printed one side only. Left margin is comprised of a vertical guilloche w/portrait medallion of unknown male. Right margin bears similar portrait medallion superimposed on a series of vertically arranged elaborately engraved ovals. Central design motif features a seated eagle, with spread wings, bearing in beak a ribbon emblazoned "Free Trade". At eagles left, an anchor, bales & a barrel. In background, sailing ships & a steamship. Text of note reads: "THE EAGLE BANK of/New Haven promises/to pay T. Dwight or bearer on demand ONE/Dollar New Haven 4th Feby 1824". At bottom center is a round portrait medallion of a helmeted classical female. Engraver's name is not wholly legible at bottom right: "Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co."
