Lesson Two: The Removal of the Cherokees in Relation to Westward Expansion

1. Mix up members of the groups from Lesson One, and pass out the Primary Source Circle guidelines. Each new group will now examine the connector role of the Primary Source Circle guidelines.

2. Give each group a focus question that targets any connection to Manifest Destiny.

3. Have each member of a group select a role to play from the Primary Source Circle guidelines, identifying a facilitator, an author, etc. Be sure all the roles are filled except for the connector and the summarizer (save those for the assessment portion of the lesson).


The new groups can inform the other students of any connections they have found relating to westward expansion and/or Manifest Destiny. The teacher can use the summarizer's role to lead focus questions or assign an essay using one or both of the guiding questions.
